Ministering Angels
They call a man with wings an angel,
That’s how they paint him, anyway,
More fact perhaps than fable,
Is a man who flies away
And leaps forth from this earth,
To quit his feet of clay,
And reach beyond man’s mortal worth,
To serve in G-d’s domain.
They call a man with wings an angel,
And I think I must agree,
For the ones that G-d calls angels,
Are those that carry His decree.
For in the heavens is a war,
Between the day and night,
Our world pressed between their armies,
One side dark, and one side light.
And in the court of G-d,
Both sides must make their case,
But His ministers on high,
Have nothing left to say.
For the world belongs to men,
Since we wrested it from heaven,
So the angels must just stand and wait,
Like they did upon the seventh.
For G-d has picked new pages,
His servants bear new marks,
Both soldiers now and sages,
Carry the star upon their heart.
The star that furnished David,
When he killed the Philistine,
And the star of royal blue,
On our national tallit.
Angels used to stand on one foot,
But now they stand on two,
An angel serves his Master,
And that angel could be you.
The G-d who clothes the naked,
Can clothe them through your hand,
The G-d who brings the miracle,
Has now tapped us in His plan.
Do not think it will be easy,
To carry out His great command,
But it’s up to us alone,
To bring peace throughout His land.
They call a man with wings an angel,
Because he has flown so high,
Like Phoebus Apollo,
He drags the sun across the sky.
There are angels now among us,
Who carry out G-d’s will,
And then return to earth,
To hide amongst our thrills.
Their souls reach up to heaven,
While their feet stay down on earth,
For the One who blessed the Seventh,
Is the only one they serve.
