Alone I dreamt myself secure, In this present – The past obscured. A worldly heaven, I was sure, Where peace was love, And art unmoored. Alone I dreamt, myself secure. So much peace, And so much life, So much wealth, And such small strife. In the present – The past obscured. But then I woke, A sudden crash, My present dream, Become its past, This reverie, Has broke at last, America, Your dream has passed. For the Jews, Who built your banks, Proud Hebrews, Who drove your tanks, Who gave their all, For this great state, Their loyalty, Has been betrayed. I ask for what, And to what end? You’re come to hate, My sacred kin. But then I think, On the past, This present, Could never last. Alone, I dreamt myself secure. But now the past, Has come returned.
